Some of the laws which the Environmental Protection Department uses in policy and enforcement are as follows:
Health Services Act, CAP. 44
“An Act relating to the promotion and preservation of the health of the inhabitants of Barbados"
Marine Pollution Control Act CAP. 392A, (MPCA)
"An Act to prevent, reduce, and control pollution of the marine environment of Barbados from whatever source."

Health Services (Nuisances) Regulations, 1969:
These regulations define the situations which may cause a nuisance and the penalties which may result if a person is convicted of committing a nuisance.
Section 3 of the Health Services (Nuisances) Regulations, 1969
Describes a nuisance as:
“(1) any place, matter, thing, deposit or accumulation of liquid or solid matter that is full, in such a state or so placed, made left, as to unsanitary, injurious or dangerous to health or likely to become so;
… (17) any chimney emitting smoke in such quantity or such density as to be prejudicial or injurious to the public health; for the purpose of the paragraph “smoke” includes grit.

Health Services Act CAP. 44 (1969) Section 11:
Provides Government the authority to demolish derelict buildings

| MARINE POLLUTION CONTROL |
Marine Pollution Control Act CAP. 392A:
Established to prevent, reduce, and control pollution to the marine environment from land-based sources of pollution.

| SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE |
The Radiation Protection Act CAP. 353A.:
An Act to give effect to Article 10 of the Radiation Protection Convention, 1960, Convention No. 115 of the International Labour Conference, relating to the protection of workers against ionising radiations.
The Miscellaneous Control (Importation and Exportation of Goods) (Prohibition) (Radioactive Material) Regulation, 2004.
Persons are required to obtain permission from the EPD prior to the importation of radioactive materials.
The Health Services (Disposal of Offensive Matter) Regulations, 1969.
These regulations restrict the disposal of offensive matter to approved disposal sites only. The Pesticides Control Act CAP. 395. This deals with the management of pesticides in Barbados. |

This document includes tables that have compliance standards for various pollutants including faecal coliform and nitrogen among others which may release into the marine environment. Standards are listed for pollutants in ambient water and also the domestic waste end of pipe standards.
